With a population base of roughly 4,500, and serving a larger area of nearly 10,000, Vanderhoof is an active community with great indoor/outdoor recreation facilities and trails. Vanderhoof is situated along Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway), and located an hour west of Prince George, BC.Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Fire Smart Coordinator will facilitate Fire Smart related activities with the District of Vanderhoof. This position will support wildfire preparedness, prevention and mitigation through public education, assessments, and mitigative work to reduce community risk from wildfires. The Fire Smart Coordinator will also assist the Fire Chief in aspects of the Fire Department?s operations, including training and development of paid on-call fire fighters; writing departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; and preparing reports.DUTIES Act as the main point of contact for the Fire Smart Program. Seek and administer new Fire Smart grant opportunities. Coordinate public education work being completed through the Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) funds. Create internal, external, and public communications and signage related to safety, fire prevention and Fire Smart activities. Recruit, supervise, coordinate, and provide training for Fire Smart personnel. Organize open houses and participate in community events and outreach programs such as Community Wildfire Preparedness Day, farmer?s markets, local sporting events, school presentations, exhibitions, tradeshows, community group meetings and more to engage and educate the public on fire safety, prevention, Fire Smart information, and emergency notifications. Organize, plan, and participate in community fuel mitigation events. Provide direction and assistance to implement Fire Smart principles on private and community land areas. Coordinate, encourage, and complete Fire Smart Home Assessments within the Vanderhoof area and provide recommendations to property and homeowners on how to reduce the risk of loss and damages in the event of a wildfire. Coordinate the implementation of the Fire Smart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program. Recruit community leaders to plan and implement wildfire mitigations in their own neighbourhoods. Facilitate Fire Smart 101 sessions. Create a Fire Smart working group, Community Fire Smart Committee and Wildfire Resiliency Committee within the District and host monthly conference calls. Collaborate and coordinate with other BC Fire Smart Committee member agencies (BC Wildfire Service, fire departments, First Nations, BC Parks, etc.) in the area. Coordinate opportunities for staff to continue education in wildfire behaviour, structure ignition, wildfire hazards in the Wildland Urban Interface, and Fire Smart mitigations for reducing wildfire risk. Promote the use of a wildfire plan for agriculture areas in and around the District. Coordinate and make recommendations on wildfire mitigation activities such as vegetation management and suppression equipment. Assist in training and development for on-call fire fighters, including developing, coordinating, planning, and executing all necessary training sessions and maintaining training records. Assist in budget preparation, strategic planning, and goal setting for the department. Assists in writing departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and policies in accordance with District policies and any applicable legislative or governing bodies. Assist in the recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of paid on-call fire fighters. Assist with managing inventory, including maintenance and record keeping of all fire apparatus and equipment.
