Our schools are teaching communities where principals, vice-principals, teachers and support staff nurture student well-being and challenge students to achieve their best.<p> <p> We are seeking a creative, dynamic, committed professional to join our team: <p> Legal Counsel<p>100% Regular<p>Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week<p>$137,277 to $160,233 per annum (Union Exempt, Level 10) <p><p>Reporting to the OCDSB?s General Counsel, Legal and Governance Services, the OCDSB?s Legal Counsel has the primary responsibility for the District?s privacy portfolio and will also offer legal advice and support to the District and its senior officials on a range of other legal matters. <p><p><p>The Legal Counsel?s privacy portfolio includes managing the Freedom of Information process, as well as all matters under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act and the Personal Health Information Protection Act, as well as managing privacy breaches, Privacy Impact Assessments, Information and Privacy Commissioner appeals, and related appeals and judicial reviews. <p><p><p>Additionally, the Legal Counsel will conduct legal research and analysis, prepare legal opinions and memoranda, and provide legal advice and services to schools, central departments, and senior staff with respect to the following areas of law:<p><p> <p> Education law (e.g., student rights, student discipline, special education)<p> <p> <p> Civil litigation (e.g., claims involving negligence, human rights, contractual disputes)<p> <p> <p> Administrative law (e.g., judicial review applications, tribunals)<p> <p> <p> Family law (e.g., custody issues impacting students, child protection concerns)<p> <p> <p> Human rights (e.g., discrimination, accommodation, harassment)<p> <p> <p> Contract law (e.g., drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements)<p> <p><p> <p><p><p> <p> <p> <p> <p> Qualifications<p> <p> <p> <p><p><p><p> <p> Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.<p> <p> <p> Minimum of 5 years experience practicing law with a focus on at least one of the following areas: privacy law, education law, civil litigation, administrative law.<p> <p> <p> Experience with some or all of the following areas is considered a strong asset: family law, human rights, contract law.<p> <p> <p> Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.<p> <p> <p> Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and governing policies applicable to the education sector. <p> <p> <p> Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely to non-lawyers.<p> <p> <p> Ability to work independently and as part of a team.<p> <p> <p> Committed to the principles of human rights, equity and inclusion.<p> <p> <p> Experience working in the public sector, or in a large unionized environment, particularly a public school board, is considered an asset.<p> <p> <p> High degree of initiative, sound judgement, independent thought, and decision-making. <p> <p> <p> Expertise in the effective deployment of legal software.<p> <p> <p> Knowledge of software applications in the Microsoft and Google suites. <p> <p><p> <p><p><p> <p> <p> <p> <p> Application Process<p> <p> <p> <p><p><p><p> The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board uses Apply to Education (ATE) to manage applications for all job competitions.
